Erica Deuso, 44, is running for Mayor of Downingtown. If elected, Deuso will become the first openly transgender mayor in the state of Pennsylvania.
Deuso grew up in northern Vermont and had a traditional childhood until she was seven years old. Then, when her father was laid off in 1987, the family dealt with the effects of poverty. The family later moved to Pennsylvania in 1992, when Deuso was 11 years old.
“Our neighbors really stepped up for us, and that experience shaped a lot of my values — it taught me how powerful a strong community can be.” Deuso recalled.
She first started her political journey at Drexel University, where she served as Vice President of the Undergraduate Student Government Association. While that experience is what began it all, what really pushed her passion for governance came from the 2016 election.
“I started volunteering for candidates I believed in — especially Bernie Sanders, since he was my mayor and later my representative in Vermont, and I believed in his message.” said Deuso. She was inspired by Sanders, cultivating her dedication to the working class.
In 2022, Deuso took her next step towards candidacy. After seeing that no one was on the ballot for an open Chester County Democrats committee seat, she wrote her name in.
Deuso said, “That was the beginning of my deep involvement in local politics, and since then, I’ve been all in, working to build a more connected, engaged Downingtown that reflects the Good Neighbor spirit that shaped me growing up.”
Erica Deuso’s Plan for Downingtown
Deuso moved to Downingtown in 2007, immediately falling in love with the area and its people. At the heart of Downingtown is its people.
“It’s the kind of place where neighbors wave to each other, where people ask how you’re doing, and actually care about the answer,” Deuso said. “It’s a town where folks rally around small businesses and show up to build our community spirit at Good Neighbor Day. When someone’s in need, whether it’s after a storm or during a personal hardship, Downingtown steps up.”
That’s why she’s passionate about serving Downingtown businesses, families, and individuals. Deuso’s campaign is built on the foundation of three core values: Safe, Sustainable, and Strong.
She describes ‘Safe’ as making sure that first responders have resources, training, and strong community relationships.
‘Sustainable’ means “protecting our environment, addressing flood risks, and ensuring smart development; making sure housing development is affordable for Downingtown residents and workers.”
‘Strong’ is all about building upon Downingtown traditions, supporting our small businesses and letting everyone’s voice shine.
Deuso doesn’t sell herself as an all-knowing candidate, but she prides herself on bringing people together.
“I believe in collaboration — bringing in experts, community members, and stakeholders to address challenges head-on.” she said. “I’ll focus on open communication, transparent governance, and making sure we’re always working toward solutions that truly serve Downingtown.”
Her Journey as a Transgender Woman
Deuso always knew she was different, but was unsure how to describe herself to others in her younger years. It’s been a journey for Deuso to become her authentic self. In 2009, she officially came out, ready to embrace her identity. She noted the strength it took and the challenges she faced.
“Like so many in the LGBTQ+ community, I had to navigate social expectations, find acceptance, and push through barriers just to live authentically.” Deuso said. “But through all of that, I was lucky to have supportive friends, neighbors, and a community that reinforced my belief in inclusivity and belonging.”
Her journey and identity has become intertwined with the way she leads. Deuso chooses to put empathy at the forefront, making sure everyone feels seen. While her trans identity isn’t the reason why she’s running for mayor, it’s a driving influence.
“I know what it’s like to feel like your voice doesn’t matter — that’s why I’m committed to making sure every resident of Downingtown is heard.” said Deuso.

Endorsed by Phil Dague
Deuso has been described as “hardworking, straightforward, and deeply devoted to fairness.” Her childhood, trans experience, and personality contribute to her views and values.
Current Downingtown Mayor Phil Dague has endorsed Deuso, stating, “Downingtown would be in very capable hands with Erica Deuso at the helm. I’ve known her for several years and found her to be both hardworking and straightforward. I have no doubt that if elected, Erica would represent all of Downingtown with fairness and vigor!”
Dague’s endorsement is meaningful to Deuso. She views him as a strong leader, with upstanding character and admires how he has led Downingtown.
“I’ve always respected the way he leads — with fairness, integrity, and a real dedication to doing what’s right. So, for him to endorse me? That means a lot. He’s set a high bar, and knowing he believes in me and my ability to represent Downingtown the right way is something I take seriously.” Deuso said.
Deuso is results-driven and she plans to bring that energy to the mayoral position.
“In my professional life, I’m all about efficiency, problem-solving, and tactical thinking — finding ways to improve systems and increase impact.” she said. “I believe in being upfront and real, and I never forget to give back to the people and communities that have supported me.”
Deuso serves on the Executive Committee of the Chester County Democratic Committee and serves on the Board of Directors for Emerge Pennsylvania, which trains Democratic women to run for office. She is also the treasurer for two LGBTQ+ advocacy organizations: the Pennsylvania Equality Project and the West Chester/Chester County chapter of PFLAG.
A Good Downingtown Neighbor
Deuso’s love for Downingtown is palpable. Her involvement is impressive, her friendly neighborhood personality is inspiring.
“I’m at every event — Good Neighbor Day, Fall Fest, parades, local celebrations. I’ve also helped plan events for the Chester County Democrats, connecting candidates with the community.” Deuso said.
She believes in showing up, something she will continue to do if she’s elected as mayor. It’s about being a true part of your community and adding to the social fabric of Downingtown.
“I’ve helped shovel snow for neighbors, driven someone to cancer treatments, cleared fallen trees, helped out after Hurricane Ida, and picked up trash in my neighborhood.” said Deuso. “To me, being part of a community isn’t just about attending events — it’s about being there for people when they need a hand.”

There are no shortage of favorite Downingtown spots for Deuso. You can usually find her in one of Downingtown’s parks with her dog, Mosaic.
“After that, I usually stop by one of our incredible independent coffee shops—because let’s be honest, great coffee makes everything better!” Deuso said. “And of course, how could I forget Station Taproom and The Bottle Room? Both have incredible food and drink lists, and they’re just a short walk from home — dangerous in the best possible way!”
Deuso is also a self-proclaimed beer nerd, traveling to over 500 breweries across 17 states with her husband.
Erica Deuso will run against Barry Cassidy for Mayor of Downingtown. Residents can vote for the new mayor in November 2025.
