Downingtown VFW Post 845 Launches Food Drive Amid Government Shutdown

Nov 10, 2025 | 19335, Downtown

In light of the recent government shutdown that has left many community members without access to food, VFW Post 845 in Downingtown is taking matters into their own hands.

Nearly 30,000 Chester County residents rely on SNAP benefits to be able to purchase groceries every month. Due to the federal government shutdown, SNAP benefits have been paused and will not resume until a federal budget is approved.

“Therefore, we are asking all of our members and non-members who frequent our Post to bring with them an item or items to be donated to The Lord’s Pantry and The Lincoln’s Promise Pantry.” VFW Post 845 said via social media. “Please spread the word to your neighbors and friends, let them know they can drop items off to use here at the Post, and let’s show our community that we are not just Veterans Taking Care of Veterans but also Veterans Taking Care of Our Community!”

Items that are most needed are coffee, juice, boxed good (Mac and cheese, pasta, rice, and breakfast cereal), canned goods (fruit, vegetables, tuna, spaghetti sauce, and soup), baby items such as diapers and wipes, toiletries (toothpaste, toothbrushes, deodorant, shaving products, and shampoo), and paper goods (paper towels, toilet paper, and tissues).

Donations can be dropped off to VFW Post 845, located at 4601 Lincoln Highway, Downingtown, PA 19335.

The food drives will last until the end of the shutdown and SNAP benefits resume.
