The people of Downingtown have spoken and they have elected Erica Deuso as Downingtown Mayor. This election win comes as a first, not only for Chester County, but for the entire state of Pennsylvania.
“Thank you to the voters, poll workers, and election staff who gave everything to make this election possible. And thank you to my opponent, Rich Bryant, for a good race.” Deuso said after her victory via social media. “Being elected as Pennsylvania’s first openly transgender mayor is deeply meaningful, and I carry that responsibility with pride and humility. I hope it reminds anyone who has ever felt unseen, unheard, or underestimated that your voice matters, and that you belong in the room where decisions are made.”
As the first openly transgender mayor in the entire Commonwealth, Deuso has made history. With this, she has garnered a fair bit of media attention, receiving “messages of congratulations from Perth, Tokyo, Montreal, Copenhagen, São Paulo, and even Kyiv.”
National media outlets have also begun reaching out.
“People know where Downingtown is now. That’s an unexpected and powerful consequence of a historic day for our town, our Commonwealth, and the blue wave that swept across this country.” Deuso said.
Deuso’s campaign is built on the foundation of three core values: Safe, Sustainable, and Strong.
She describes ‘Safe’ as making sure that first responders have resources, training, and strong community relationships.
‘Sustainable’ means “protecting our environment, addressing flood risks, and ensuring smart development; making sure housing development is affordable for Downingtown residents and workers.”
‘Strong’ is all about building upon Downingtown traditions, supporting our small businesses and letting everyone’s voice shine.
Deuso describes herself as an advocate for public safety, housing affordability, flooding mitigation, equality & LGBTQ+ rights.
It appears that Downingtown’s future is bright with Mayor-elect Erica Deuso at the helm.
