Kiddie Academy to Open in Downingtown, Offering Offering a Child-First Approach to Early Learning

As the new school year approaches, families in Chester County have something special to look forward to. Kiddie Academy, a nationally recognized early learning center, is opening its doors this month in Downingtown. The center promises a new kind of childcare experience — one that’s rooted in curiosity, creativity, and community.

At the helm of this new venture is Arvind Aravindhan, a former professional tennis player turned entrepreneur and educator. After years of coaching young athletes, Aravindhan realized his true passion wasn’t just in sports. It was in helping people grow.

“I learned that it’s better to serve than to receive,” Aravindhan said. “That mentality came through tennis, but it’s something I try to live by every day.”

From the Tennis Court to the Classroom

Aravindhan’s journey into early childhood education wasn’t a straight line. After years on the professional tennis circuit, he transitioned into coaching, where he found joy in teaching and mentoring. That love of guidance has translated seamlessly into the launch of Kiddie Academy Downingtown.

“Creating opportunities for others, being a part of the local community, and shaping the next generation—it’s all very fulfilling,” Aravindhan said.

He isn’t doing it alone. His partner and co-owner, Srini Manickman, an IT professional, is also deeply rooted in the Downingtown community. Manickman and his wife, Indhu have three children. Manickman had long wanted to get into business with Aravindham, who both share an entrepreneurial drive. With his own personal experience with childcare as a father, the business partners decided to explore the industry before landing on Kiddie Academy.

“I’m an entrepreneur at heart,” Aravindhan said. Together, they’re building more than just a daycare center. They’re building a hub for child-centered learning and family connection.

Aravindham’s wife, Karpagam, is a senior principal scientist at Glaxo Smith Kline and together they have an adult daughter.

Learning Led by Curiosity

Kiddie Academy of Downingtown will serve children ages 6 weeks to 6 years and offers a proprietary curriculum known as Life Essentials®. Based on the “Six C’s” — character, confidence, curiosity, connection, critical thinking, and creative expression — the program is designed to support children’s holistic development.

What makes the academy stand out is its strong belief in child-led exploration. “The academy is very different and unique because it is one of the top-tier childcare facilities. It’s very kid-driven,” Aravindhan explained. “Children lead the curriculum, even as young as one year old.”

Each classroom is equipped with learning stations, including STEM-focused areas that encourage problem-solving and creativity. Though the structure is different from Montessori programs, where multi-age groups often learn together, Kiddie Academy focuses on peer-based learning, grouping children by age to foster age-appropriate development.

“We want kids to understand that learning is fun. Learning should be led by their curiosity,” Aravindhan said.

A Whole-Child Approach

Beyond academics, Kiddie Academy places a strong emphasis on emotional, physical, and social well-being. Teachers at the academy are state-certified, and the facility is designed to create a warm, clutter-free, and well-lit environment. Classrooms feature clearly defined areas and soft, welcoming colors to avoid overstimulation.

“One of our core philosophies is to give every child the confidence to be who they are,” Aravindhan noted. “When you box children in, you don’t give them the confidence they need to grow.”

Children will enjoy community dining, eating alongside their teachers in a family-style setting. This approach not only encourages healthy eating habits but also fosters independence and a sense of belonging.

The academy also ensures all meals and snacks are provided, with a focus on allergy-conscious and nutritious food. And fresh air isn’t optional; children are guaranteed outdoor time every day, even in winter.

“We’re strong believers in the value of fresh air,” Aravindhan said. “A minimum of one hour a day, coats on in the winter.”

Low Tech, High Engagement

In an age of screen saturation, Kiddie Academy is taking a different route. There’s only one computer in the older classrooms and iPads are used strictly for administrative purposes, such as managing attendance and sharing updates with parents.

“Kids as young as two are handed cell phones,” Aravindhan said. “By the time they’re 10 or 12, parents say their kids are addicted. STEM and mental stimulation can be done without screens, like building, problem-solving, hands-on play. That’s how real engagement happens.”

Each classroom will also be equipped with cameras for safety and peace of mind, allowing parents to check in on their children during designated times.

Kiddie Academy isn’t just looking to care for local children. It aims to be an active participant in the community. The academy has already started building its presence, hosting a “Pictures with Santa” event at the Downingtown Library last winter and planning several new family-friendly events.

This fall, they’ll join in local festivities with a “Trunk or Treat” Halloween event and participate in Downingtown’s annual FallFest. Another standout event is their upcoming Storytime Live, where staff and community members dress up as children’s book characters for an interactive reading experience.

“It’s something we are really looking forward to,” Aravindhan shared. “We want families to see us not just as a school, but as part of the community.”

Ready for the School Year

With licensing and playground installation nearly complete, Kiddie Academy Downingtown is set to open just in time for the new school year. Operating Monday through Friday from 6:30 a.m. to 6:00 p.m., the center is designed to be a safe, enriching place where children can spend up to 10 hours a day exploring, learning, and growing.

“We want it to be a fun place for them to come to,” Aravindhan said. “Every kid will feel empowered and safe.”

From its child-led curriculum to its commitment to health, diversity, and community involvement, Kiddie Academy of Downingtown is poised to become a valued resource for local families.

And for Aravindhan, it’s all about continuing a life of service, one young learner at a time.
